Chapter Seven

Murdoch’s body still continued to ping pleasantly from his epic orgasm, even after fixing the fence. He’d plotted the location along with notes needed to complete a better fix. Plus, the large downed limb could be cut up for firewood.

Back on horseback, Murdoch led the way along the fence line at a ground-eating jog. He glanced over his shoulder every few minutes and always spotted Malakai a couple of paces behind him. The man—angel, holy shit, my beloved is an angel—sported a relaxed expression as he took in the scenery.

His mind still reeled with everything that had just happened. He would need to call Master Jaymes that evening to let him know of his status change. Not only did he need to pack up his stuff to vacate the quarters he’d shared with Nester, but he needed to ask for quarters to be built a little ways back on the property.

Murdoch couldn’t expect his angel beloved to hide his nature all the time. Plus, he loved looking at Malakai’s stunning wings. The feathers adorning the large appendages were a gorgeous mix of tans and browns.

They’d felt amazing, too.

Malakai had explained how his glamour spell hid his aura as well as his wings. They were still there, however. The angel had to be careful about who was behind him at any given time, since in general, he didn’t care for others touching his wings.

Murdoch felt blessed that he would have the privilege to pet them any time he wished.

“Will your coven really build us our own secluded home?”

Upon hearing Malakai’s question, Murdoch eyed him curiously. “They will, but how did you come to that idea?”

Malakai grimaced as he tapped his temple. “Sorry. One of an angel’s gifts is reading the minds of others.” He quickly hurried to add, “Assuming they’re thinking about something with enough emotional intent.”

“Huh.” Murdoch frowned. “As a vampire, I always knew I’d develop a mind-link with my beloved, but to have you able to read random shit?” After a second, he admitted, “I’m not certain how I feel about it. Isn’t it... intrusive?”

To Murdoch’s relief, Malakai chuckled, obviously not offended. The fact that his beloved had removed the suppression spell so he could scent him helped, too. His vampire nature needed to be reassured that he was pleasing the other half of his soul.

“I don’t mean to laugh at you,” Malakai began, a twinkle in his aqua eyes. “But as a vampire, you read minds and manipulate them on a regular basis to get a donor. How is my catching thoughts and using them to spread peace, harmony, love, and joy in the world any different?”

“Huh. Said like that.” Murdoch scoffed, shaking his head. “Nope. Not different much at all.”

“If you wish, I’ll teach you how to block your thoughts from me.” Malakai smiled warmly at him. “As my stella guida, once we’ve finished our bond, you’ll have that gift.”

“Oh, very nice. Thanks.” Then something else occurred to Murdoch. “Uh, probably don’t try to read the thoughts of bonded couples because they’re normally pretty racy.
